When we consume more sugar than our bodies can use at that time, the excess glucose is converted into glycogen and stored in our liver and muscles.
If those storage sites become full, any excess sugar is converted into fat and stored in our adipose tissue, leading to weight gain and an increased risk of obesity.

 

Furthermore, consuming too much sugar can lead to insulin resistance, a condition in which our bodies become less responsive to insulin. This hormone helps us regulate our blood sugar levels. So now we come full circle.
Over time, this can lead to type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition in which our bodies are unable to regulate our blood sugar levels effectively.

Are there really only 2 types of natural sugars?

It's true that there are only two forms of natural sugars: lactose and fructose.

To reduce our intake of added sugars, it's essential to read food labels and be aware of the different names for added sugars. Added sugars can hide in many processed foods, even those that don't taste sweet, like pasta sauce, bread, and salad dressings. 

 

Some common names for added sugars include:

 

  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Cane sugar or sucrose
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Agave syrup
  • Maple syrup
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Molasses

 

By being mindful of these names and reading food labels, we can make informed choices and reduce our intake of added sugars. 

It's also helpful to choose whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. These foods provide essential nutrients and are naturally low in added sugars.
